1) The narrator is a nurse as she says in the third paragraph, ‘some of us nurses’.

3) His ultimate wish was to meet his daughter and have her forgive him.
4) He had not met her for years ever since they had a quarrel over and boyfriend which made her leave home. Her parting words were “I hate you,” and the old man had been trying to reconcile with her.
5) He was afraid that he might not see his daughter and wanted to express his forgiveness towards her.
6) She thought about the joy which the daughter must have brought the old man long ago as it always did to the parents she encountered at the maternity ward.
7) The medical team made various attempts to revive him but to no avail.
8) The narrator’s purpose in telling us this story is to convey the message that we should always treasure the time we have with our loved ones and never take them for granted.

Summary
